Holmes Junior/Senior High School has opened its doors to adults who share its mission of molding the youth of today into positive contributing members of society.  The adults serve as mentors to 8th and 9th grade students.  The mentoring program, called Bulldog Connection, is under the direction of Renata Watts.  Since the program started more than three years ago, she has brought in close to 50 adults who mentor.  The program has already made a difference in the lives of students, as their grades, attendance and attitude towards school have improved.

Bulldog Connection is a school-based mentoring program designed to offer one-on-one guidance, support and encouragement from the adult mentor to an eight-grade student.  Research shows that students who have a relationship with a positive adult role-model succeed better in school.  Renata Watts is making sure that happens in Covington Schools.

Whether you work for a corporation or are a member of a local church, you may have what it takes to make a positive impact.  No special school-related skills are needed to be a mentor.  What one does need is to enjoy working with youth, complete the necessary background check, interview and training sessions and be willing to commit the time.

If you are interested in mentoring an eighth-grade student or would like to know more about the program, please contact Renata Watts, program coordinator, at (859) 655-9545, ext. 6413 or via email at renata.watts@covington.kyschools.us.
